NOTE:
- Vietnam Era dog tags usually did not have the Notch. Some Navy tags in the early 1960s had the Notch. See WWII and Korea Era dog tags for the Notch.
- We automatically use Indent text (letters are stamped downward, military standard) on Vietnam Era dog tags. If you prefer another text option, please note it in the Comments.
- There are no lower case letters. All text stamped with upper case letters (military standard).
- Navy Vietnam Era dog tags were stamped with the hole on the right (60%) or the left (40%).
- The 1950s is when the Navy started stamping the information on lines 1, 3, and 5, leaving lines 2 and 4 blank.
- Last name and first name is stamped on line 1. If both names are too long, the first name can be moved to line 2. Also first and middle name initials were sometimes used instead of the complete name.
- Service numbers for the Navy during the 1960s were 7 digits in the following format XXX XX XX. SSN was used in the late 1960s and on.
- The choices for blood type during the Vietnam Era are A, B, AB or O. In the early to mid ‘60s, the Rh factor of POS or NEG was usually not included.
- The religious preference was written as a complete or abbreviated word. All forms of religion accepted.
- If you have Notched dog tags issued during Vietnam, then order through the Korea Era page.
- Don’t worry about having the exact format. The data presented here was taken from actual dog tags that we have seen. As long as you have the above stated information, your dog tags will be extremely close. Also, the years stated are general guidelines. Your actual unit’s dog tags may vary earlier or later.
